Ice Wolves clip Wings

The La Ronge Ice Wolves returned to the win column Friday night in Weyburn when they dumped the Red Wings 5-3.

“I thought we started pretty well, but we couldn’t get the bounces and the puck to go into the net,” said Ice Wolves Asst. Coach Kyle Schneider. “I thought the boys did a great job of fighting through it and sticking with it.”

Thomas Wright scored the eventual game-winner 5:11 into the third period when he beat Dazza Mitchell for his sixth of the campaign. Wright also chipped in with an assist for a two-point evening.

Dylan Handel, Rylan Silzer, Walker Jerome and Dallyn Peekeekoot provided the other La Ronge goals. Parker Layton had three assists for the Ice Wolves Friday. Dawson Smith was not particularly busy, turning away 16 shots for his 12th victory of the campaign.

“We cycled the puck, we battled through their defence,” said La Ronge forward Thomas Wright. “Whenever we would pressure them, they would cough up the pucks. We just fought to the net, got rebounds – and I think that was the key to our win.”

Ty Mason scored twice for Weyburn, while Jackson Hassman had the other marker for the Red Wings. Dazza Mitchell stopped 32 shots in a losing cause.

With the win, the Ice Wolves improved to 18-8-1, which has them occupying third in the SJHL standings.

La Ronge will close out its four-game southern trip Saturday night in Estevan when they take on the Bruins for the second time this week.
