Ice Wolves come up short at home

The La Ronge Ice Wolves finished their weekend with a 6-2 loss Saturday night on home ice versus the Battlefords North Stars.

Zane Normand scored his first SJHL goal 5:54 into the game, which gave the Ice Wolves a 1-0 edge. La Ronge took a 2-0 lead at the 9:38 mark of the first after Jacob Cossette wired home his fifth of the campaign.

“We got off to a great start in the first – I thought it was our best period in a long time here,” said Ice Wolves Asst. Coach Kyle Schneider.

The Ice Wolves had a two-goal cushion heading into the second, but they were unable to hang on at the Mel Hegland Uniplex Saturday night.

Hunter Burgeson, Riley Girod, Evan Waldie and Owen Underhill scored in the second period for North Battleford as the Stars took a 4-2 advantage into the final stanza. Andrew Casellato and Jordan Grill found the back of the net in the third period for the North Stars en route to the weekend sweep.

“Unfortunately, we had a few mental lapses in the second period tonight,” said Schneider. “Then, we take a five-minute major again in the third period – and it really shot us in the foot.”

Joey Hawco made 28 saves for the win, while Topher Chirico turned away 46 shots in the La Ronge net. With the loss, the Ice Wolves slipped to 2-7-1 on the campaign, which has them sitting in 11th in the SJHL standings.

The Ice Wolves will look to end a four-game losing streak Tuesday night in Nipawin when they take on the Hawks for the second time this season.
