Ice Wolves come up short versus Flin Flon

The La Ronge Ice Wolves didn’t start 2023 the way they wanted, dropping a 4-3 decision in regulation to the Flin Flon Bombers Tuesday evening at the Mel Hegland Uniplex.

The Ice Wolves opened the scoring 49 seconds into the game on the power play when Thomas Wright banked home his eighth of the season past Harmon Laser-Hume, who turned away 27 shots for the victory. Flin Flon’s Brent Gulenchyn tied things at one at the 13:59 mark of the first.

Cole Duperreault gave the Bombers a 2-1 edge 9:06 into the second frame on the man advantage when he solved Dawson Smith, who stopped 46 shots in the loss.

The Ice Wolves tied the game at two 9:22 into the middle frame after Kale Taylor stuffed in his seventh of the campaign. La Ronge restored the lead 10:38 into the period when Jacob Cossette rifled home his fourth of the season.

The Ice Wolves were not able to hold onto their lead on Tuesday night though. Jaeden Mercier and Jeremi Tremblay would record third period goals as the Flin Flon Bombers completed the comeback.

With the loss, the Ice Wolves slipped to 21-11-3 on the campaign, which now has them sitting in third in the SJHL standings.

La Ronge will look to end a three-game slide Wednesday night in North Battleford when they take on the top-ranked North Stars. You can catch the action on the Ice Wolves Radio Network with Braden Malsbury.
