The La Ronge Ice Wolves slipped to 0-2 in SJHL pre-season action following a 3-1 loss to the Battlefords North Stars Monday night on the Flying Dust First Nation.
The Ice Wolves opened the scoring 7:28 into the game on the power play when Parker Layton tallied his first of the exhibition schedule. Ben Portner tied the game at one at the 15:04 mark of the first stanza after he beat Topher Chirico, who made 14 saves in his pre-season debut for La Ronge.
Neither team found the back of the net in the middle frame, but Riley Girod potted the eventual game-winner 7:17 into the third period. Jordan Grill tacked on an empty netter late in the game to secure the victory for the Battlefords.
Meantime, the Ice Wolves will look to bounce back Thursday night in Flin Flon when they take on the Bombers for the second time this pre-season.
The Ice Wolves will travel to Big River First Nation Friday for a date with the Nipawin Hawks. La Ronge will then host Nipawin Saturday night at the Mel Hegland Uniplex before closing out their six-game exhibition schedule Sunday afternoon at home against the Battlefords North Stars.
