Ice Wolves drop season opener

The La Ronge Ice Wolves started their season with a tough 8-4 loss Friday night in Melfort versus the Mustangs.

It was a wacky first period as the Ice Wolves found themselves down 5-1 before the game was 12 minutes old.

“First game of the year, we knew we might be a bit sloppy here and there,” said Ice Wolves Asst. Coach Kyle Schneider. “Obviously, you don’t want to spot them six goals to start the game.”

Will Forsberg, Tyler Gyori and Raine Hodge all scored their first SJHL goals, while Jacob Cossette also found the back of the net for La Ronge. Topher Chirico made 36 saves in a losing cause.

Mathieu Pigeon scored twice for the Mustangs, while Chase Friedt-Mohr, Ryan Duguay, Nolan Roberts, Zac Somers, Logan Belton and David Coyle also tallied. James Venne turned away 27 shots for the win in the Melfort net.

The Ice Wolves will look to rebound Saturday night at home when they host the Nipawin Hawks at the Mel Hegland Uniplex. Puck drop is slated for 7:30 p.m.

“It will be an exciting night with our home opener, I’m sure the Mel will be packed and rocking,” said Schneider. “We’re going to bounce back and come to the rink with a positive attitude.”

Following Saturday’s contest, La Ronge will prepare for a home-and-home series with the Flin Flon Bombers next weekend.
