The La Ronge Ice Wolves earned a single point Friday night on home ice when they dropped a 5-4 decision in a shootout to the Melfort Mustangs.
“I think the second period of this game was the best period we have played all year,” said Ice Wolves Asst. Coach Kyle Schneider.
The Ice Wolves got goals from Mason Bueckert, Liam McInnis, Rylan Silzer and Parker Layton. Karl Soneff got the start in the La Ronge net and he turned aside 35 shots.
Logan Belton scored twice for the Mustangs, while Nolan Roberts and Hayden Prosofsky scored the other Melfort goals. Ryan Duguay was the only scorer in the three-round shootout.
La Ronge’s power play was buzzing Friday night as the team connected three times on five opportunities.
“It was nice to see our guys have some success on the power play,” said Schneider. “They were getting pucks to the net and finding those rebounds. Unfortunately, we gave up a couple on the penalty kill.”
With the loss, the Ice Wolves record is now 2-8-2, which is good for 11th in the SJHL standings.
La Ronge will look to end a six-game losing streak Sunday afternoon on home ice when they host the Kindersley Klippers at 5 p.m.
