The La Ronge Ice Wolves earned a single point in Melville Friday night following a 5-4 overtime loss to the Millionaires.
“We say it all the time, but there’s a lot of parity in this league,” said Ice Wolves Asst. Coach Kyle Schneider. “If we’re not going to outskill teams, we’ve got to outwork teams.”
The Ice Wolves had two leads throughout the game, but they were unable to close out Melville. Mason Bueckert, Jaden Beauchamp, Raine Hodge and Jacob Cossette had the La Ronge goals. Karl Soneff made 46 saves in a losing cause.
Former Ice Wolf Flynn Maxcy was the overtime hero for the Millionaires just 59 seconds into the extra session. Luc Bydal scored twice for Melville, while Caden Drury and Jadon Iyogun rounded out the offence. William Dyke made 35 saves for the win.
For the second straight game, the Ice Wolves found themselves killing off eight penalties.
“We shot ourselves in the foot,” said Schneider. “Our penalty kill did a decent job, but we’ve got to play five-on-five. It just takes guys out of the game.”
With the loss, the Ice Wolves slipped to 2-4-1 on the season, which has them occupying 10th place in the SJHL standings.
La Ronge will look to salvage the road trip Saturday night in Yorkton when they take on the Terriers for the second time this week at Westland Arena.
