Ice Wolves earn point in Weyburn

The La Ronge Ice Wolves earned a single point in Weyburn Friday evening when they dropped a 4-3 decision in a shootout to the Red Wings.

“I thought we got off to a pretty good start, fighting the puck a little bit in the first period,” said Ice Wolves Asst. Coach Kyle Schneider. “We came out in the third and we showed how we can play Ice Wolves hockey.”

Liam McInnis, Trenton Curtis and Thomas Wright scored for La Ronge, while Dawson Smith turned away 38 shots in a losing cause. Wright was the only La Ronge player to find the back of the net in the shootout.

Jackson Hassman, Max Monette and Elijah Anderson provided the goals in regulation for the Red Wings, while Anderson and Simon Pollock tallied in the skills competition. Eric Kahl made 37 saves for his first victory of the season in the Weyburn net.

With the loss, the Ice Wolves slipped to 27-14-5 on the season, which still has them holding down second in the SJHL standings with 59 points. La Ronge has picked up at least a point in its last three games.

The Ice Wolves will look to rebound Saturday night in Melville when they take on the Millionaires. Saturday’s game gets underway at 7 p.m.

“I think Melville is in a playoff race for one of the last couple spots, so I think they are going to be hungry,” said Schneider.

The Ice Wolves will play Notre Dame Monday before closing out this four-game southern swing Tuesday back in Melville.
