The La Ronge Ice Wolves opened their first game of the regular season last night against the Nipwin Hawks. The Mel Hegland Arena was filled with a good crowd which was entertained with an exciting game that lived up to the anticipation built over the 10 months since hockey was shut down in November 2020.
After Nipawin opened the scoring Ice Wolves Captain Nolan Doell would bring La Ronge faithful to their feet with his first goal of the season. The Hawks added 2 more goals in the opening frame.
In the second period the Ice Wolves came out hitting, and slowed down the Hawks offense, holding them to only 6 shots on net. Neither team would tally in the middle period.
In the third Doell scored his second of the night to bring La Ronge to within one and at 12:17defenceman Nate Looft evened the score with his first career SJHL goal.
The Hawks weren’t done though, and scored 2 goals to take a 5 – 3 lead. The Ice Wolves pulled goalie Alex Bell for the final 2 minutes and Kole Christensson scored with 15 seconds left for La Ronge’s fourth goal. Although the Wolves pressed in the final 15 seconds the clock would run out before the team could complete the second comeback.
