Friday Oct 1 saw the Flin Flon Bombers in La Ronge to take on the Ice Wolves in the first of back-to-back home and home tilts. It was also the Goals for Kidsport game introducing the program which assists children of families facing financial obstacles to participate in sport. The Ice Wolves and Bombers both came in with 1-2-0 records setting the stage for the night.
The first period was very even, with both teams having chance after chance. Andrew Blocker would break the dead lock with his second of the season at 8:18 on the powerplay. After a delay to repair the Zamboni doors damaged by some heavy hitting along the boards in the Bombers zone, Nathan Gagne would tie the game for Flin Flon.
The Bombers would get two powerplay goals by Xavier Lapointe and Cole Vardy early in the second. La Ronge struck back on their own powerplay with Tristan Lambert getting his first goal since his return with the Ice Wolves. Jaeden Mercier would extend the Bombers lead back to two goals late in the second stanza putting the score at 4-2.
In the third, an early powerplay goal by Aaron Greyeyes assisted by Holden Knights and Nolan Doell got La Ronge back within one. Jeremi Tremblay scored for Flin Flon but La Ronge cameback again as Curren Wintonyk – Pilot would score a squeaker past the Flin Flin goalie.
That was as close as the wolves would come though, with the Bombers wrapping up the third period with goals from Gagne and Gabriel Shipper giving Flin Flon the 7 – 4 win and dropping the Ice Wolves’ record to 1-3-0.
The Ice Wolves were outshot 55 – 29 in the contest. The addition of Tristan Lambert has helped an inexperienced defense, but Head Coach/GM Kevin Kaminski and Assistant Coach Kyle Schneider will continue to work on tightening things up on our back end.
The Ice wolves won’t have long to lick their wounds as they will be back at Flin Flon on Saturday Oct 2nd. Listen to the game at 6:30 live on the Ice Wolves mixlr radio broadcast. Its free, just click on the icon on www.icewolves.ca.
