Ice Wolves Lose 5-1 in Nipawin

The Ice Wolves travelled to Nipawin for the return match of their home and home opening series with the Hawks. La Ronge iced the same line up as Friday night with the only change being Dawson Smith getting the start in net.

Dayne Feicht of the Hawks opened the scoring at 13:36 of the first, followed by two more Nipawin goals by Brody Wilson and Josh Morton. As Assistant Coach Kyle Schneider said after the game, “we played 16 good minutes in the first, slacked off for 4 minutes and end the period down 3 – 0. That’s how competitive this league is.”

The Ice Wolves came out stronger in the second and started to push the Hawks in their zone. Jacob Jonkman finally put the puck in at 6:45 with assists from Kole Christensson and Parker Layton. The Ice Wolves goal was the only one of the second period and the period ended 3 – 1.

A late penalty in the second left La Ronge on the penalty kill at the start of the third, and Evan Bortis put a seeing eye shot behind a screened Smith 40 seconds in. The Hawks would add another marker to make the final score 5 – 1. Shots were 26 – 20 for the Hawks.

The loss puts the Ice Wolves at 0 and 2 for the season. Next game is Thursday September 30th against Battleford at 7:30. This game is the SJHL’s Truth and Reconciliation event and the Ice Wolves will be wearing orange jerseys to recognize the lost children and Survivors of Canada’s residential schools.
