Ice Wolves win Home Opener

HOVDEBO BRILLIANT IN HOME OPENER

The Ice Wolves opened up their 2012-2013 season with a hard fought, extremely entertaining shoot out victory over the Nipawin Hawks.

The Wolves opened up a 2-0 lead on goals by Ritchie and Zerebecky.  With less than 1 minute to go in the first, the Hawks closed the gap on a seeing eye goal that Hovdebo did not have a chance on.

The Hawks tied the game in the second, which was highlighted by stellar goaltending by both Hovdebo and Jones.

In the third, the Wolves grabbed the lead again on a Rhyse Dieno’s first of the season. Again the Hawks fought back to tie the game and goalies took over from there, closing the door the rest of the way on some brilliant saves and a few posts and crossbars.  This set the stage for Hovdebo to shine in the shoot-out, stopping all 3 Hawks shooters (2 with poke checks that Johnny Bower himself would have been proud of).

The only goal in the shoot-out was a great deke by Nathan Boyer that left Davis Jones still searching for his Jock in the Mel Hegland rafters. Boyer capped off a great start to the season by also adding 2 helpers on the evening.
