Ice Wolves win seventh straight

The La Ronge Ice Wolves erased a two-goal deficit en route to a 4-3 overtime victory Tuesday in Wilcox versus the Notre Dame Hounds, which extended their winning streak to seven games.

“I thought the boys got better as the game went on,” said Ice Wolves Asst. Coach Kyle Schneider. “They had to find their legs on the big ice a bit in the first period, but they didn’t quit – and they kept battling back.”

Ethan Strik threaded the needle 3:36 into the extra session on the power play when he blasted a bullet past Notre Dame netminder Johann Tremblay-Kau.

Parker Layton, Lleyton Shearon and Walker Jerome also found the back of the net for the Ice Wolves. Dawson Smith was tremendous in the La Ronge net, making 43 saves for his 11th victory of the campaign.

“Our resilience, it’s unreal – our track pressure is amazing,” said La Ronge forward Ethan Strik. “Of course, our goaltender – one of the best in the league, if not – the best.”

Carson Baylis scored twice, while Will Dawson supplied the other goal for the Hounds. Johann Tremblay-Kau made 34 saves in a losing effort.

With the win, the Ice Wolves improved to 17-7-1, which vaulted them back into second place in the SJHL standings. La Ronge will search for its eighth consecutive victory Wednesday night in Estevan versus the Bruins.

The Ice Wolves will battle the Red Wings in Weyburn on Friday before finishing a four-game swing back in Estevan Saturday night.
