La Ronge’s season ends

The La Ronge Ice Wolves saw their season come to an abrupt end Sunday at home when they dropped an 8-2 decision to the Melfort Mustangs, who took the series in six games.

“It was a tight-fought series, hats off to Melfort, they ultimately got it done,” said Ice Wolves Asst. Coach Kyle Schneider. “I don’t think tonight was a good representation of how the series went.”

Jacob Visentini and Jacob Cossette had the La Ronge goals, while Dawson Smith turned away 34 shots in the setback. Smith was brilliant all series long, frustrating the Melfort shooters each night.

“Dawson Smith is our MVP, he’s our most valuable player,” said Schneider. “He is a gamer, he puts in the time and he gets rewarded on the ice, hats off to Smitty on a heck of a season.”

Zac Somers, Wyatt Cook and David Rioux all scored twice for the Mustangs, while Ben Tkachuk and Tye Evans also found the back of the cage. Joel Favreau stopped 26 shots for the victory in the Melfort net.

The Ice Wolves will now get set for their awards banquet. Stay tuned to our social media channels for more information in the coming days.

Meantime, the Melfort Mustangs will prepare for the second round, but their opponent is still to be determined.
