As the La Ronge Ice Wolves gear up for another exciting season, fans can once again count on the steady and enthusiastic voice of play-by-play announcer Drew Balen to guide them through every hit, goal, and big moment. Now entering his second season behind the mic, Balen has quickly become a trusted and respected presence in the broadcast booth—and a fan favourite across the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL).
A graduate of the Sport Management program at Brock University, Balen brings both academic training and practical experience to his role. Before making the move to La Ronge four years ago, he worked in junior hockey and professional baseball, honing his skills in fast-paced, high-pressure environments that prepared him well for the world of sports broadcasting.
In addition to his role with the Ice Wolves, Balen works full-time as a Community Relations Coordinator with Northern Sport, Culture & Recreation District, where his passion for community development and youth programming is front and centre. Whether on the air or in the community, he’s known for his commitment to giving back and making a difference.
What truly sets Balen apart as a broadcaster is his remarkable hockey knowledge—particularly of junior hockey and the Ice Wolves organization. He’s recognized as one of the most informed voices in the SJHL, offering detailed insights on player stats, team trends, and league developments. His broadcasts are balanced, informative, and always professional—giving equal attention to both teams and elevating the experience for all listeners.
Balen’s enthusiastic delivery and polished play-by-play style bring the game to life, capturing the emotion and energy of every shift. He has a natural talent for storytelling and a deep respect for the athletes he covers, making each broadcast feel meaningful and engaging.
In just a short time, Drew Balen has established himself as an essential part of the Ice Wolves experience. With a headset on and a passion for the game in his voice, he’s helping build a stronger connection between the team and its fans—one call at a time.
