After three straight losses to their northern rivals, the La Ronge Ice Wolves finally got the better of the Flin Flon Bombers with an overtime victory on Sunday night.
The two teams started their 2025 with a game on Saturday night at the Mel. Needless to say, that game did not go the Wolves.
On Sunday, the Wolves headed east on the 165 for the last of four games in a row.
After Bombers’ forward Luke Lepper gave Flin Flon the early lead, the Wolves finally remembered who they were and put three goals past goalie Mathew Kieper. Taite Donkin, Vinny Di lulio, Brett Boucher were the first period goal scorers.
A second period goal by Jacob Cossette gave the Wolves a 4-1 lead but the Bombers would not yield.
Goals by Bombers’ Gruener, Piccininno, and Ringor sent the teams into overtime. The Wolves dominated the extra 3 on 3 period but were unable to score, meaning the game would be settled with the shootout.
After Graham Brown stopped all Bomber shot attempts, Wolves forward Hudson Cameron went five hole on Keiper giving La Ronge the hard fought victory.
Wolves next action is Friday January 10 when they travel to Melfort to take on the league’s top team, the Melfort Mustangs.
