Wright named SJHL Rookie of the Month

DirectWest Rookie of the Month – Thomas Wright, La Ronge Ice Wolves

Fans in Northern Saskatchewan will think we made the “Wright” choice for January’s DirectWest Rookie of the Month. Thomas Wright of the La Ronge Ice Wolves offensive game surged in the month of January, scoring four times and adding eight assists. With his 12 point month, Wright is now the new leading scorer amongst rookies in the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League with 11 goals and 22 assists, helping the Ice Wolves sit near the top of the SJHL standings.

SGEU MVP of the Month – Ben Tkachuk, Melfort Mustangs 

It’s only fitting that the final SGEU MVP of the Week for the month of January is also this month’s MVP for the Month of January. Ben Tkachuk tore it up for the Melfort Mustangs this past month and has averaged 2 points per game. In total, the Captain of the Mustangs found the back of the net 4 times and added a whopping 16 assists. The 20-year-old is now up to 9 goals and 34 assists this season in 31 games and is ranked 10th in SJHL scoring.

Sasktel Goalie of the Month – Jackson Fellner, Nipawin Hawks

The Nipawin Hawks are one of the hottest teams in the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League and a big reason why is because they solidified their goaltending with the addition of Jackson Fellner. The 19-year-old finished the month of January with a 5-2-0-1 record, had a 2.38 GAA and a .914 save percentage. He also had a shutout against the Melville Millionaires on January 13th.

SuperU Defenceman of the Month – Tynan Ewert, Battlefords North Stars

Tynan Ewert continues to be an anchor on the blueline for the Battlefords North Stars and this past month was no exception. In 12 games in January, Ewert had a goal and 13 assists. The North Stars continue to be the top team in the SJHL and Ewert plays a big role in Battlefords success. The 20-year-old defender from Duncan, British Columbia now has 6 goals and 34 assists this season and is the top scoring Defenceman as of right now in the SJHL.
