WEYBURN, SK – The La Ronge Ice Wolves opened the scoring and fought back to tie the game in the third period, but a pair of late power-play goals against proved decisive in a 4–2 loss to the Weyburn Red Wings on Tuesday night.
La Ronge carried the play early, outshooting Weyburn 11–6 in a scoreless first period while generating some good looks on their opening power-play. Their pressure paid off early in the second when Dayton Tailfeathers snapped home his fifth of the season at 3:24, giving the Wolves a 1–0 lead.
Weyburn responded with two goals just past the midway mark of the frame. Despite trailing 2–1 through 40 minutes, the Wolves held a 25–21 shot advantage and were winning the majority of even-strength battles.
The equalizer came early in the third.
At 8:41, Connor Hoemsen buried his fifth of the season off a smooth setup from Grayden Perozni and Waylon Gardipy, tying the game 2–2 and swinging momentum back to La Ronge. The Wolves continued to push, eventually outshooting the Red Wings 38–32.
However, special teams became the difference.
La Ronge went 0-for-5 on the power play, while Weyburn finished 2-for-7, scoring both game-winning insurance markers on late third-period opportunities at 12:45 and 17:38.
In goal, Riley stopped 28 of 32 shots while Weyburn’s Nate Stevens turned aside 36 of 38 shots in a full 60-minute effort.
