The La Ronge Ice Wolves dropped a 3-1 decision Friday night on home ice to the Weyburn Red Wings.

“I think we had enough scoring chances to win that hockey game,” said Ice Wolves Asst. Coach Kyle Schneider. “Obviously, the hockey gods were not on our side tonight, so we will pray to them.”

Zane Normand had the only goal for the Ice Wolves, while Topher Chirico was brilliant, turning away 39 shots in a losing cause.

Colin Doherty, Blake Betson and Jerome Maharaj tallied for the Red Wings. Angelo Zol stopped 37 shots for the victory in the Weyburn net.

The Ice Wolves will be looking to rebound Saturday at home when they conclude their weekend series with the Red Wings at the Mel Hegland Uniplex.

“Obviously, it’s an emotional time of the year,” said Schneider. “We’re trying to be spoilers and Weyburn is trying to make the playoffs. Tomorrow night, we have to take two big points from them.”

Following Friday’s setback, the Ice Wolves are now riding a six-game losing streak. La Ronge sits 11th in the SJHL standings with its 15-31-5 mark.
