Ice Wolves come up short

The La Ronge Ice Wolves closed out their weekend with a 3-2 loss Saturday at home to the Weyburn Red Wings.

“I liked the energy, I liked the intensity (to start the game),” said Ice Wolves Asst. Coach Kyle Schneider. “However, killing all of the penalties we took in the first did not help. We want our guys to play hard, we want our guys to play physical, but we have to control our emotions.”

Parker Layton and Mason Bueckert scored for the Ice Wolves. Meanwhile, Topher Chirico was brilliant in the La Ronge net, stopping 42 shots in the loss.

“I thought Topher was pretty solid, he gave us a chance to win again,” said Schneider.

Braigh LeGrandeur tallied twice for the Red Wings, while Blake Betson had the other Weyburn marker. Angelo Zol made 37 saves for the victory.

With Saturday’s setback, the Ice Wolves are winless in their last seven games. La Ronge is controlling 11th in the SJHL standings with its 15-32-5 record.

The Ice Wolves will look for a big bounce back game next Friday night in Flin Flon versus the top-ranked Bombers.
