Graduating La Ronge Ice Wolves defenceman Parker Layton recently signed a pro contract with the Columbus River Dragons of the Federal Prospects Hockey League.

“My dad got a call from former coach Bob Beatty, asking if I’d be interested in going to Columbus, GA to play hockey for another month or so,” said Layton. “After some thinking and discussion with my parents, I made the decision to give it a go – and I was very excited.”

In three games with the River Dragons, Layton has recorded two points. The La Ronge, SK product is coming off a great season with the Ice Wolves, scoring 18 times and adding 31 assists for 49 points in 54 games.

“The hockey is really good,” said Layton. “I’ve only played three games, but I can tell from the experience that I’m going to learn a lot from these guys. It’s very fast-paced hockey with a lot of skill.”

The River Dragons sit first overall in the league with 122 points in 50 games. Columbus is back in action Friday night when they host the Wytheville Blue Ridge Bobcats.

Layton says he still plans to pursue post-secondary hockey next season, but for now, he’s enjoying the hockey under the sun in Georgia.
