The La Ronge Ice Wolves battled back and earned a point Friday night at home when they dropped a 5-4 decision in overtime to the Battlefords North Stars.

Kale Taylor, Parker Layton, Liam McInnis and Raine Hodge scored for the Ice Wolves, while Topher Chirico turned away 44 shots in the loss. La Ronge trailed multiple times throughout the game, but they found a way to force extra time.

“I think our character was really showing tonight,” said Ice Wolves Asst. Coach Kyle Schneider. “We had that no-quit attitude – I think we battled back three times to push it to overtime.”

Tanner Gold scored the winner just 23 seconds into the extra session, while Riley Girod, Jordan Grill, Alex Izyk and Jackson Allan also found the back of the net. Justen Maric made 18 saves for the victory in the North Battleford net.

The Ice Wolves will be looking to rebound Saturday night at the Mel Hegland Uniplex when they entertain the Battlefords North Stars for the second straight evening.

“I think we need a little better start tomorrow night,” said Schneider. “It’s three games in three nights for them, so we should be the fresher team. We need to try and limit their offence and obviously, we need to try and finish on our chances as well.”

La Ronge’s 5-14-3 record still has them sitting 11th in the SJHL standings.
